Safe Refrigerant Cylinder Storage for the Shop
A practical checklist for organizing cylinders, protecting valves, and reducing avoidable shop hazards.

Choose a Suitable Location
Store cylinders in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, open flames, vehicle impact, and blocked exits. The storage layout should allow workers to identify products quickly and move cylinders without lifting them over obstacles.
Follow the applicable fire, building, occupational-safety, and local requirements for the facility.
Protect and Identify Every Cylinder
Keep cylinders upright and secure them against tipping. Protect valves and caps, preserve labels, and separate full, partially full, recovered, and empty containers.
Never rely on color alone for identification. A clear written label and an inventory record help prevent cross-connection and accidental mixing.
Handle and Transport Deliberately
Use a suitable cylinder cart rather than dragging or rolling containers. Inspect the cylinder and valve before moving it, keep the cap in place when the cylinder is not connected, and secure the load during transport.
Do not expose cylinders to unnecessary heat or leave them in an enclosed vehicle for extended periods.
Make the Process Routine
A short inspection at the start of each shift can identify damaged labels, unsecured cylinders, blocked ventilation, or overdue inventory updates.
A safe storage area is not only a compliance measure; it also reduces service delays and makes the right product easier to find.
